WAT_UNESCO
Montréal 2011

06.12.2011  ///  On Friday December 2, over 200 people attended the presentation of urban design students’ propositions as part of the WAT_UNESCO - Montreal 2011. This workshop, which closely examined sectors of the Autoroute 20 Gateway Corridor, was organized by the UNESCO Chair in Landscape and Environmental Design of the University of Montreal (CUPEUM). About sixty students and international experts in architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design unveiled 12 landscape and urban design visions.

These proposals, which aim at creating a strong and distinctive identity and stimulating the vitality of the corridor, its adjoining territories and living environments, will directly contribute to the ongoing work of the Autoroute 20 Gateway Corridor Committee of Local Experts composed of representatives of cities, boroughs, regional planning agencies, as well as ministries directly involved in the urban planning of this area.

Four winning proposals were selected by an international jury chaired by Brigitte Colin, Specialist in Architecture & Cities – Migration and Urbanization UN-Habitat/UNESCO.

The jury particularly appreciated the great quality of the landscape and urban design visions elaborated during the WAT_UNESCO’s 8th edition. The integration of social, environmental, and economic issues within the students’ proposals overreaches the values conveyed by the UNESCO at the very heart of this activity.

The 12 urban design visions illustrate a wide range of planning strategies for 6 local areas of the gateway corridor linking the airport to downtown. The results of this UNESCO workshop successfully add up to the proposals received during the YUL-MTL: Moving Landscapes international ideas competition.
